Polymer Processing Engineer – On-site

A leader in the processing and transformation of plastic waste is looking to expand their technical team to support growth in 2022. The company is known for their unique perspective and innovation in solving the global crisis of plastic pollution by re-engineering material properties to be sustainable and circular for high performance applications. Upcycling materials which are commonly found in landfill have now been repurposed to replace virgin materials whilst reducing carbon emissions by more than 40% through their unique manufacturing methods and further contributing to their customer’s sustainability goals. The company is currently in a growth phase and this hire is vital for the R&D team in which you will be at the forefront of the laboratory whilst being present throughout experimental process designs and implementation into the industry. The Polymer Processing Engineer is a technical position requiring a candidate with a background in polymer chemistry and experience in the plastic industry.

This position is an essential addition to the team in the USA. The organisation is rapidly growing in the plastic space and are looking to add experienced technical professionals that have knowledge in polymer processing and production of thermoplastics. The primary function of this role includes being a key individual for experimental process design, implementation of technology, following the process from pilot scale experiments to commercialisation and improvements of efficiency, cost and sustainability. Technical expertise will be at the forefront in bringing a new perspective to the role and offer experience in polymer chemistry to further their capabilities. The role will be collaborating closely with the R&D and technical team with the vision of creating a more sustainable future.

The role:

  • Provide expertise in plastic processing for new product development, materials, technologies, and production around high-performance plastics such as Polyamides, Polyurethanes and TPUs.
  • Align material properties to optimise processing conditions for compounding, extrusion, and injection moulding.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate equipment to ensure smooth operations and meet project deadlines.
  • Prepare samples and trials to evaluate material performance for processability and characterization.
  • Support up-scale effort from lab testing to a customer’s production line/commercialization.
  • Prepare and complete characterization of new products (mainly thermoplastics).
  • Manage data and information for R&D systems and processes.
  • Able to identify new engineering techniques for production, processing and efficiency.
  • Time split between laboratory and process design, data analysis and planning (80:20).

Required experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years in-depth professional experience in a technical/laboratory environment.
  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Plastics processing, Material Engineering OR Polymer Chemistry and experience with thermoplastics.
  • Experience in development/characterization, processing and production technologies such as Reactive Extrusion (REX), ATOD technology, TGA, DSC, DMA and FTIR.
  • Experience in project and product development, team collaboration, up-scaling projects to commercialisation, forward thinking innovation with sustainability in mind.
